WRAN Background

The concept of the Interlock Project had been developed by the Western Region Cultural Development Network (WRCDN) which consisted of arts officers and arts organisations from the municipalities of Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham and the Shire of Melton.

In 2004 WRCDN successfully received funding from Arts Victoria to fund the Interlock Project, and further funding was received from the municipalities of Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Wyndham and the Shire of Melton to employ a community liaison officer.

In 2005 the Interlock Project conducted a series of artist forums across all the participating city councils which enabled artists from those communities to identify the purpose and vision for an western region arts network. Most importantly these forums identified a variety of artists who wished to be actively involved in the development of such an arts network. Eleven artists became the core working group who formed the bases of the emerging western region arts network. Four action groups were formed to enable the group to work productively and democratically. These artists took forward the purpose and visions as identified by the artists who attended the initial Interlock Project fora.

In January 2006 WRAN elected it first committee and in February 2006 became an incorporated association and with a starting membership of eleven.
